Business directory
To increase traffic to your business website and to improve your rankings on the search engines and on sites like Alexa then you should look at business directory registering.
A business directory like for example U.K.Business directory receives high traffic volumes (this site had an Alexa ranking of 105,184 on the day of writing this article, which is a respectable traffic rank). Business directories like this tend to be top of the search engines for business type searches and if your site is listed then you will receive your share of this traffic.
It might be that you are listed under one category and the person looking for one service might see your site under another category too, or even simply find you for the search they made in the first place.
To find other business directories to get listed in simply do a search on the term “Business Directory” or “Business Directories” in your favourite search engine and then go through this list. You will normally have to enter a reciprocal link to the directory site and in some cases you might need to pay an annual fee.
In my opinion you should be able to find enough directories that offer a free listing in their directory so you should not need to pay for this service. However, sometimes by paying a fee you get listed quicker and you can get a priority listing at the top of your section.

Not sure about the value of directory links – yes, they are one way but Google must be well aware that webmasters use these for PR purposes.
I would suggest top directories (such as Yahoo, Business.com, etc.), Local Directories and Niche directories are worth pursuing links.
But submission all the General directories has limited value.

Yes I agree with the top directories (Dmoz, BOTW) etc and Yahoo/Google. As well as the home grown niche ones.

Absolutely agree. Dmoz has always been my top choice. But BOTW is another story. You have to pay and not all the time they accept your site. There is no refund…

I think you have to be real careful about which directories you submit to. The top ones are all good but some you don’t want to be associated with. You don’t want the search engines to find you hanging out in the dark neighbourhoods. You could receive a nice big Google SLAP!

I found that submitting site to 1000 directories will help PR and some traffic, but this will hold for a few month, and then you need to re-submit. Google should not penalize you for incoming links at all… But you must not exceed adding 15 links per day… then you may get in troubles. You can outsource something like that for 30$….

Yeah I do agree with you. Because there are a lot of directories that offers a free listing now, one must really be patient in looking for those directories. and I think that it would be really a great waste if I go for the ones that needs a pay.

I agree with listing in the top directories but other then that I equate most of them to be similar to FFA’s and not worth your time
